A Pilot Project for Continuous Video-Based Traffic Analysis and Safety Monitoring
Project Overview:
This project is motivated by the City of Toronto’s Vision Zero program with the goal of deploying and evaluating a real-time safety analysis solution for continuous monitoring and evaluation of traffic conditions and conflict patterns at a selected group of intersections. The project is aimed at answering the following specific research questions:
- Where are the high conflict zones at a given intersection between vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles? What are the potential
causes of these conflicts? - Which intersection approaches have the highest potential for collisions? What are the contributing factors?
- What is the safety effect of a specific countermeasure (e.g., reduction of curb radius, reduced speed limit, new pavement marking,
traffic control types)? - What are the recommendations for improving the safety of the vulnerable road users?
