A Pilot Project for Continuous Video-Based Traffic Analysis and Safety Monitoring

Project Overview:

This project is motivated by the City of Toronto’s Vision Zero program with the goal of deploying and evaluating a real-time safety analysis solution for continuous monitoring and evaluation of traffic conditions and conflict patterns at a selected group of intersections. The project is aimed at answering the following specific research questions:

  1. Where are the high conflict zones at a given intersection between vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles? What are the potential
    causes of these conflicts?
  2. Which intersection approaches have the highest potential for collisions? What are the contributing factors?
  3. What is the safety effect of a specific countermeasure (e.g., reduction of curb radius, reduced speed limit, new pavement marking,
    traffic control types)?
  4. What are the recommendations for improving the safety of the vulnerable road users?
